Galileo Cc 2 Telescope Information
A new visual arts installation celebrating Galileo’s invention of the telescope has opened at World Museum Liverpool as part of the Biennial arts festival.
The telescope that Galileo built in the late 1500s had the magnifying power of a pair of inexpensive binoculars available in any Wal-Mart, but it was enough to open up a new world.
Using his mathematical knowledge he designed and constructed a Galileo telescope using a combination of refracting lens which was far more powerful than the more common spy-glasses being used by other astronomers.
From Galileo to the Hubble, viewing space has come a long way.
Before Galileo turned his telescope toward the night sky the act of astronomy was pretty much an astrological pursuit where objects and motions of object in the sky were explained using ancient and archaic understandings of the universe and how it works.
The eighth planet from the sun, Neptune was the first planet located through mathematical predictions rather than through regular observations of the sky. (Galileo had recorded it as a fixed star during observations with his small telescope in 1612 and 1613.)
Galileo was the first person to use the telescope to view the cosmos. His observations with the new technology led to the discovery of moons orbiting Jupiter and lent support to the heliocentric model of the solar system.Just such an opportunity exists today with a unique observatory that is scanning the skies....
Cosmic dust is a type of dust composed of particles in space which are a few molecules to 0.1 mm in size. Cosmic dust can be further distinguished by its astronomical location; for example: intergalactic dust, interstellar dust (potentially concentrated in a nebula), interplanetary dust (such as in a circumstellar disk) and circumplanetary dust (such as in a planetary ring).
In our own Solar System, interplanetary dust causes the zodiacal light. Sources include comet dust, asteroidal dust, dust from the Kuiper belt, and interstellar dust passing through our solar system.
